Types of fire extinguishers on board

The type of fire extinguisher on the ship is adjusted to the potential. Under this there are types of fire extinguishers on ships that ship owners should prepare, including:

Soda Acid Fire Extinguisher

The main component of this acid soda fire extinguisher is sodium bicarbonate and sulfuric acid. Combined from these compounds can form carbon dioxide gas so that it can be used to relieve fire.

Suitable for use to extinguish class A fires (for example: the results of the burning of wood, fiberglass, upholstery and furniture) that can be found in ship accommodation areas. The structure of the extinguisher consists of a container which contains a solution of sodium bicarbonate. Whereas in a small bottle containing sulfuric acid a booster system is placed which is covered by a safety glass.

Mixing acid and soda to produce carbon dioxide gas, occurs when the booster is hit hard. The pressure of carbon dioxide gas will exit the pipe in the nozzle. However, this time the use of acid soda fire extinguishers is prohibited for use because the gas can cause toxic effects.

Water Fire Fighting

As well as sour soda, fire extinguishers on board for class A can be dealt with using a portable water extinguisher that is typically 9 liters in size. One of the tubes is filled with water and is equipped with a CO2 cartridge that functions as a water booster with the pressure that it generates. When the plunger is pressed the CO2 cartridge will tear and the pressure generated will push the water out.

Foam Fire Extinguisher, Chemical and Mechanical

Is one of the types of fire extinguishers on ships that are suitable for class B fires in areas of flammable liquids such as lubricating oil and fuel.

In chemical foam, the main constituent components are sodium bicarbonate and aluminum sulfate. The main tube contains sodium bicarbonate and its small tube contains aluminum sulfate. The working system will simply activate the plunger to remove the lid so that the two chemicals can be mixed and release foam. However, when this is useful it is rarely because it is believed to cause toxic effects.

While for mechanical foam, which also has two tubes where the central tube is filled with carbon doxide and foam while on the outside is filled with water. When the plunger is removed, it can release carbon dioxide and push the foam and it can’t mix. Furthermore, foam and water will come out through the nozzle to extinguish the fire.

Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are used in class B or class C with flammable liquids and the involvement of electrical energy equipment such as motors, switches, cables, etc. on a ship. This gas is sufficiently concentrated so that it is not good if it is used in a narrow room and lack of oxygen.

We find this tool a lot in the engine room. The carbon dioxide gas is stored in a liquid tube, then by pressing the plunger it will release it in the form of gas.

Dry Powder Extinguisher

Contains sodium bicarbonate powder which is useful for extinguishing the types of fires in all classes. It’s usually placed in the engine room that is located near electrical equipment.

In a large container containing sodium bicarbonate, but in a small container containing carbon dioxide that functions as a booster in the plunger. When the plunger is pressed, carbon dioxide / nitrogen will be released thereby forcing the powder to dry out of the nozzle.

After all types of fire extinguishers on the ship, it is also possible to use fire extinguishers for boats such as foam, dry chemicals, carbon dioxide and vaporizing liquid.

The use of such equipment is suitable with the type of fire and fire extinguisher. However, ship construction equipment and fire extinguishers are important components that must be fulfilled.

The following are the steps that must be done if there is a fire on the ship :

1) Sound the Fire Alarm in each ship’s room.

2) Make sure the crew has gathered at the Muster station.

3) Form teams according to the muster list for fire fighting.

4) Ensure the location / type of fire to make it easy to extinguish and type of equipment used.

5) If the outage is finished, gather again at the Muster Station to check all members.
