Function and workings of the oil water separator on the ship

Oil Water Separator (OWS) on a ship is a vessel where the fluid that does not dissolve are separated from each other due to differences in density (density), in this case the fluid in question is water and oil, which is the specific gravity of water is greater than the specific gravity of the oil so that during the separation process water will be at the bottom and oil will be at the top. the working principle of separating the oil water separator is done by changing the speed and direction of the fluid from the well (well), so that the fluid can be separated. Oil water Separator function is used in handling water that comes from bilga where the water is still mixed with oil and must be separated before being discharged into the sea. Oil water Separator uses Stokes’ Law to define the speed of the float of an object / particle based on its specific gravity and size. In this tool, oil will accumulate above the water surface.

Parts and functions of oil water separator :

  1. Blige Pump, functions as a sewer.
  2. Bilge Separator (Stage I), functions as a water separator tube with oil.
  3. Coaliser (Stage II), functions as a reservoir of sewage water separated by a bilge separator from oil deposits.
  4. Disk (slabs), serves as a means of separating the water got from oil because of differences in specific gravity
  5. Piston valve, serves as a valve to drain separate suction water where dirty water oil enters the Sludge tank.
  6. Selenoide Valve, functions as a drain regulator, works on the basis of signals sent from dirty water oil (centra unit)
  7. Sludge Oil Tank (dirty water oil tank), serves as a reservoir of dirty water oil.
  8. Filter, serves as a filter that is in coaliser (stage II).

The basic principle and workings of OWS are separation based on the specific gravity of the elements contained in the treated sewage. Where the elements that have the highest specific gravity (mud) will be at the bottom and come out through the sludge out, then the specific gravity water is heavier than oil and lighter than mud will be under oil in the separation chamber. So that the oil on the surface will be flowed to the Waste Oil Tank, while the water that has gone through the second filtering process will come out of the OWS with a content level below 15 ppm.

Technical Component Specifications, Filters Components in the form of filter wire in which large particles will be separated during the process of suctioning sewage water from the vessel then only liquid media will enter the OWS aircraft before the separation process:

• Plunger pump Component in the form of a plunger pump, transferring liquid media with high viscosity from the got column to the separating tube so that it presses the liquid out.

• Primary and Secondary Separating Sections These plates form horizontal horizontal plates in which the got water enters this separation chamber through a filtering / separating process on each plate. Where the element that has the highest specific gravity (water) will be at the bottom then the smaller specific gravity oil above it will be collected in the oil collection room (Oil Collecting Chamber) so that the water content of sewage oil will be reduced.

• Water Collecting Chamber This room is located on the right side of the separating tube which functions as a collection point for seawater that has been separated based on its specific gravity. And then the water will be released into the sea through a drain pipe.

• Oil Outlet Pipe (Oil Outlet) This pipe serves as an outlet for oil expenditure from the oil collection room to the Waste Oil Tank.

• Water Outlet Pipe (Water Outlet) This pipe serves as a channel for water removal from the water collection room outside the ship.

Implementation of Oil Water Separator Plane

Oil Water Separator Above a Fish Boat :

In the placement of OWS aircraft aboard ships, studies are still needed regarding the dimensions of the engine room and the discharge of waste oil produced by the ship. For ships of 50-100 GT, it is still possible for OWS aircraft to be installed in the engine room, but for vessels of 10 – 50 GT, it can interfere with the mobility of the crew in working.

Oil Water Separator Above the Port of Fisheries Port :

Possible obstacles to the installation of OWS aircraft on ships 10 – 50 GT, then it can be tricked by placing it on the dock. Where, ships with the size of 50 GT and below can dispose of and collect the sewage water into the storage tank and will then be processed by OWS aircraft that are available at the dock.
